Petition Details

We the undersigned petition Hillingdon Council to introduce a 20mph speed limit and traffic calming measures, specifically including speed bumps, on Rofant Road, to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for residents.

Rofant Road is a residential street that is regularly used as a cut-through by parents driving to and from St Helens School, avoiding traffic congestion on Eastbury Road. This issue has historically been raised directly with St Helens, but discussions with the school have not resulted in any change to the situation.

Vans and cars are regularly speeding down the road, barrelling into the blind bends shortly after turning off Eastbury Road, with little visibility or time to react to pedestrians, cyclists, or oncoming traffic.

In addition to the through-traffic, drivers are parking at the top end of the road, near the school, and leaving their vehicles idling while waiting to drop off or collect children. Drivers are also often parking on single and double yellow lines at the top end of the road, blocking the carriageway. This adds to the volume of stationary and moving traffic on a narrow residential road not designed for this level of use.

The safety risk this creates is not hypothetical. A cat was recently run over during the school drop-off period and has had to have its leg amputated as a result. There are a number of elderly residents living on the road, as well as families with young children, all of whom should be able to use the road and pavements without risk to personal injury.

Given the residential nature of the road and the presence of these vulnerable groups, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times, we believe it is only a matter of time before a person is seriously injured.

We are asking the Council to introduce a 20mph schools speed limit and traffic calming measures on the road, specifically including speed bumps, to reduce vehicle speeds, discourage the road's use as a through-route, and address the parking and idling problem near the school.
